I’m so into the Olympics this year, and naturally I’ve been curious to see what the athletes have to say about food! These are my favorite reads so far:
Nastia Liukin (22, gymnast, 5x medalist) “My mom raised me to believe that you have to treat your body like an expensive car — you have to put in the most expensive fuel. My approach is to have a clean diet and eat fresh food, and eating organic is definitely important to me.”
Nick McCrory (20, diver) “Want a gold medal or an ice cream cone?”
Common thread: “It’ OK to have bites of food that probably aren’t the best for you because that way you won’t deprive yourself and then want more of that food.”
2. What do Olympic Gymnasts Eat? This one is an old article (from 2004), but I think it’s a pretty honest portrayal of how an elite Olympic gymnast eats…lots of protein, checking the carbs, and frequent small meals.
4. Olympic Diets from Olympic Committee Nutritionist: Elite athletes have strict, purpose-driven diets, but struggle with the same things as us! Read about how they cope with emotional eating and how they break habits (they also get a lot of help that us normal folk just don’t have!). This is from Gabby Douglas’s nutritionist!
5. One of my favorite track athletes, Lolo Jones, drinks a green protein smoothie everyday! Her go-to recipe contains strawberries, spinach, banana, and protein powder. I loved her interview on the Today Show this morning where she talks about her childhood and beliefs.
And on another note…I read that Serena and Venus Williams are now raw vegans!
